Wow...A Vision of Students Today is such a thought provoking and powerful video. Surprisingly, the opening message was written in 1967, long before personal computers and the World Wide Web! I found all five essays incredibly eye-opening and informative; information access and libraries have rapidly changed in the past few decades and will continue to do so. In the essay, Away from the Icebergs, Rick Anderson sounds a warning that libraries must embrace and integrate new models of information exchange and creation in a Web 2.0 world. Three major shifts are moving the library's physical collection towards digital, tearing down barriers between users and information, and making library services accessible however and wherever users want.
Michael Stephens continues the discussion in New World of Librarianship by describing Library 2.0 as a "social and emotionally engaging center for learning and experience." He offers a “strategy guide” for helping users find information, gather knowledge and create content." Among the characteristics of Library 2.0 are engaging with and planning for users, incorporating Web 2.0 tools but not adding technology for technology's sake, and identifying trends to make quick but sound decisions.
Change is inevitable. The question is: How will libraries embrace the changes and incorporate the best technologies and services available to serve it users?
